UK Rail Accidents
Over the decades a number of accidents have occurred on the UK railway. Each accident is investigated, a cause determined and the lessons learnt used to improve safety on what is already one of the safest modes of transport in the UK.
Worst Accidents
The worst incident was the Quintinshill rail disaster in 1915 with 226 dead and 246 injured; the 1952 Harrow and Wealdstone rail crash resulted in 112 deaths and 340 injured. The death toll from the 1957 Lewisham rail crash was 90, for the 1889 Armagh rail disaster was 80 and the 1857 Tay Bridge disaster was 75.
